Tim has been very active in his efforts to load up team Seattle for the present and for the future. The G.M. hung out at Dick's Drive In, contemplating what to order from the menu and what to throw back. He tossed out the Fish(er) burger to the hovering seagulls and ordered up a large round of spicey Frye(s).

Coach Holmgren has never not had a 3rd QB during his tenure as coach...until now. He has vowed the team would be getting that 3rd quarterback soon and it happened today. Charley Frye was obtained from the Cleveland Browns with what has been reported to be a 6th round pick. Charley Frye has experience starting 19 games for the Browns in the last 2 plus seasons. At 6-4 218 pounds he can see over the linemen with ease.

The college scouting report on Fry says he has good vision and is very mobile. The report says he has above average overall accuracy from the pocket and on the move. Shows a soft touch and displays good timing on his throws. Reads coverages well and makes a lot of checks at the line. Fast and elusive on the run but must secure the ball better. He has been timed with a 4.64 forty and benched 330 pounds. Intelligence measured with a 38 on Wonderlic.

Playing for Cleveland, he was an accurate passer (63%) which says alot for working behind that woeful Cleveland offensive line. The Jets, Falcons, Giants and Panthers have all had discussions with the Browns regarding the acquiring of Frye.

To pave the way for adding a third quarterback to the roster, the Seahawks traded away fan favorite Bryce Fisher to the Tennessee Titans for an undisclosed draft choice. Fisher, recently lost his starter position to Kerney first and then competed with Darryl Tapp for starting the right side defensive end position, ultimately losing out to Tapp. Fisher did not ask for a trade. He was the consumate professional accepting his role. Bryce was a vital cog to the rotation at defensive end though. His loss of leadership and experience will be felt. Recently acquired Jason Babin and Baraka Atkins, will provide depth at defensive end. Fisher was acknowledged as the best run defender at defensive end for the Hawks.

Note the NFL salary cap was not a motive in either trade as the Seahawks have $8.5 million available under the cap.

Gladiator Hawk

[Comments taken in SeahawkBlue Forums]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Citizen K Likes This™ Award – Buccaneers game

Sun-drenched Seahawks Stadium was yesterday the site of a very likeable event, namely, a win by the Seahawks. But even more appealing than the victory was the play of certain individuals and squads, whose luminescence was unhideable under even the most tightly-woven bushel. In fact, their skills were showcased to the NFL like a rhinoplasted Buzz Aldrin brandishing his hot daughter—err, granddaughter—err, trophy grandwife—around Hollywood.

Citizen K, for the most part, (as you may already be aware,) hates corporate sponsorships like Aztecs hate la Malinche and rappers hate decency. However, he believes the Hawks might have truly found gold with one of their major contributors, Qwest, whose Line-Backer™ service has been well adapated to the gridiron environ in the form of an incredible group of defenders. Loofah, Jew-Peat, and Leroy “The Vulcan” Hill played like Wal-Mart customers intent on procuring the $30 DVD player, as they knocked down, stomped, trampled, and generally wreaked havoc upon the offense of the Bucs. Loofah wowed the crowd with his stable of delightful impressions, including Tony Roma (as he carved up Cadillac Williams’ ribs after first tenderizing him,) and Sheryl Crow violently rejecting Lance Armstrong’s teabag proposal (as he punched the ball out on the opening drive.) Citizen K likes Loofah as the game’s MVP , as he read plays like a Broadway producer, and hit with Katrina devastation force. Jew-Peat and The Vulcan were right with him, making sacks like Teong Chuan Plastic Company, stalking the line of scrimmage like John Hinkley, Jr., and halting runs like Immodium. What a game by this crew!

Citizen K likes suspense movies, but oddly dislikes suspense in real life. Thus, he liked the second half of this game very much, as it contained absolutely no tension whatsoever. The Seahawks’ defense came ouf of halftime as brawny and stout as Bruce Vilanch’s suspenders, and the game was basically over at that point. Huge plays were made by, among others, Rocky Bernard (big hits on Garcia and McCown,) Patrick Kerney and Bryce Fisher (high-low blast on sack of Garcia,) Jew-Peat and Hill (pounding of Garcia, forcing him out,) Chuck Darby (big tackles and 1/2 sack,) Craig Terrill (tipped passes and big stop,) and Kelly “Toothpick” Jennings (pass defensed, surehanded tackles, and a fumble return.) The defense so far is looking as inspired as Moses, and is playing as fast as the Micro Machines guy talked and as hard as Gwen Stefani’s stomach. Like the attentions of Mark Foley, they’re all on the same page; many times during the game incompletions and sacks were forced by the Verizon-like total coverage by the defensive backfield combined with a relentless, “Sally Struthers pursuing yum-yums” pass rush. If the first game of the year is any indication, the offseason pickups of Mora, Grant, Russell, and Kerney will be as successful as the Battle of Navarino was at ending Muslim piracy in the Mediterranean.

Citizen K doesn’t like Jerramy “LOL—it’s Jerramy Stevens” Stevens. That's all he has to say about that.

Unsurprisingly, Citizen K likes it when the Seahawks score points. This generally requires an offense as magnificent and flowing as Absalom’s hair, and a return game devoid of irresponsible and brainless, Cindy Sheehan-like penalties. These goals were both achieved at times during Sunday’s game, although not yet consistently. Shaun Alexander, Citizen K’s second-most admired player, like a refreshing summer rainfall started slowly with a yarddrop here and there—even getting stuffed on third and short—but picked up momentum, transforming into a gale-force downpour of yardage by the game’s end. Deion Branch apparently didn’t even dress for the game, and D.J. “DJ Hackett” Hackett got hurt, but their absences were concealed by great receiver play by Na-Bur, Bobby “Geritol” Engram, Mack Strong, Marcus “Geritol Jr.” Pollard, and Maurice “Change of Pace” Morris. SA even caught a couple of passes! (albeit juggling them, but still, baby steps…) Their receiving efforts were assisted by an incredible blocking performance by the Offensive Line which rivaled Jessica Alba’s tight package in its perfection. Sacks, penalties, blown blocks, blitzes—all were, like the city of Jericho, basically reduced to nonexistence. Chuck Taylorly (conversely,) the Bucs had a spate of offensive and special teams whoopsies that took them out of big plays several times and put them at a huge competitive disadvantage; (as if playing the Hawks in Seattle wasn’t enough…) The Hawks will need a more complete offensive game to beat better teams this season, but it’s obvious that, like Casey Jones, they’re on the right track.

Citizen K would like to mention the special teams again. He liked Na-Bur’s long returns, but SO MUCH disliked the negative “gains” “earned” on multiple returns, the long returns given up, and the poor decision making while returning kicks out of the end zone. If the team had lost this game, the play of the special teams might have been a big contributor to the defeat. On the other hand, Citizen K wears a ring. Seriously though, on the other hand, the big yardage they gave up on returns was, like John Edwards’ riches, earned through less-than-moral means, and it was justly returned to its rightful owner, the Seahawks. However, that leaves the problem of the returners stuttering like Blue Jays’ manager John Gibbons, cutting back, and losing yardage. That is a problem that, like your kitten or husband, must be fixed in order to avoid unwanted results in the future. Again, Citizen K for the most part likes Na-Bur returning kicks, especially the sweet stiffarm chastisement he levied against the Bucs’ punter’s insubordinate helmet on the 56 yard return that set up the Hawks’ first TD. (Citizen K is certain Leonard Weaver had to change his pants on the sideline after that play.)

In all, Citizen K liked the win. The team is, like Fred Thompson for President, displaying great potential in virtually all phases of the game, and, unlike John McCain for President, or Amy Winehouse, is revealing few—if any—noticeable weaknesses. Teamwork, like French armpits, is strong, and the short passing attack is flourishing like grass around a septic tank drainfield. Good showing, so far.

Anagrams:

Derrick Brooks – sir cork be dork

Josh Bidwell – who beds Jill

That’s it. Sorry, my anagram software apparently doesn’t like Bucs names.

[Leave Comment]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Alba's Dark Angel Award

First a little history for the lurkers and uninitiated.

This award was started at the beginning of the 2005 season, and was originally titled the Moonlight Graham Award, after my first Adopt-A-Seahawk Chris Davis, and the Burt Lancaster character in the movie Field of Dreams. In keeping with that character, this award is given out to the unsung player or players who step up to the plate and excel in the game, in one matter or another.

Last season, in order to update the award and better reflect my unhealthy attraction to gorgeous women who I don't have an ice cube's chance in hell with, it was renamed the Alba Dark Angel Award. This not only ties the award a little closer to my screen name, it allows me to illustrate the text with hidden pictures of Jessica! The purpose of the award remains the same, so without any further ado, let's get to the inaugural recipient for the 2007 season.

Watching the first half of the game on tape delay, thanks to a 2:00pm EST conflict with my son's Pop Warner game, I was afraid that the only viable candidate for this award would be Ryan Plackemeier! Sadly, my son's team was shut out for the entire game, where the Seahawk offense was able to break out of their funk shortly before halftime.

The 2007 season didn't really seem to start of the offense until Nate Burleson provided a startling wake up call with his 57 yard punt return that he nearly took to the house. However, he also did his Taco Wallace impression on a few other returns, running East-West rather than North-South, and nearly killed the momentum as quickly as he started it, when he fumbled the ball fighting for extra yardage. Here's a little Alba Advice for Nuclear Nate: don't try so damned hard. Let the game come to you and you'll be fine, and who knows, you may be waking up the morning after next to a beautiful Alba Dark Angel one day this season.

Early on in the game, it was looking like Marcus Pollard would wind up with this week's Alba, where he racked up most of his 5 drive sustaining catches for 43 yards - but most importantly no FUMBLES or DROPS! But while it's really great to see Mack Strong's contemporary fitting in so nicely with the Seattle offense, 5 catches for 43 yards just isn't enough to get you Week #1 iron. Keep up the good work though Marcus, I see one of these in your future.

Speaking of Tight Ends, former Seahawk Jerramy Stevens nearly had this week's trophy firmly in his grasp, however, just like the one ball that was thrown his way, he fumbled it, and then the damned refs ruined his homecoming by negating the play (and a turnover) by calling the first of two very ticky-tack roughing the passer penalties. Look at the bright side Jerramy, I think you'll have several weeks to think about this pitiful performance, once Goodell responds to your conviction. And since it's said that 'time passes', you'll probably drop that too.

But there was one player who stepped out of the shadows in this game, but before we get to that, I have to HonorAlba Mentions.

The first goes to Mike 'Tear the Cover Off the Playbook' Holmgren, who called a very aggressive and creative game plan, that included several WR and RB screen passes, a naked bootleg, and a FREAKIN FLEA FLICKER! Yes, you've read that correctly. The Walrus seemed to be channelling the spirit of Jack Patera there for a moment, when Shaun Alexander pulled up at the line and tossed the ball back to Matt. Unfortunately, the play was sniffed out by the aggressive Buccaneer defense, and actually cost us yardage, but it was refreshing to see some old-time razzle-dazzle out of the Seahawks offense.

The second goes to the Entire Team, which was only called for 3 penalties for 35 yards, two of which where B.S. roughing the passer calls, and none of which came on special teams.

And now, a drum roll please...

The Week #1 Alba Dark Angel Award for the 2007 is going to backup running back Mo Morris. When Mo Mo came into the game, the speed and efficiency at which he brought it to ultimate climax, might only be rivaled by a chance romantic encounter between this blogger and the namesake of this award! Looking at his stat line, 3 carries for 15 yards, 1 reception for 34 yards, it doesn't appear that he did much. But sometimes it's not so much WHAT you do, but WHEN you do it.

From the way that Shaun ripped off his chinstrap in anger shortly before MoMo entered the game, I was concerned that he had gotten hurt. But whether S.A. was dinged up, or just needed a blow, MoMo made the most of the opportunity to get into a game and affect the final outcome. While only gaining 15 yards, it seemed that each of his three carries produced a first down. And the one catch he had, scored the insurance touchdown the Seahawks needed to salt away the rest of the quarter and secure the victory.

So Mr. Morris, enjoy your night with this Alba Dark Angel. I can imagine that just like a night with the lovely Miss Jessica, in the morning you'll roll over and just want Mo, Mo, Mo!

[Comments taken in the SeahawkBlue Front Page Forum]

(don't forget to look for the hidden picture of Jessica!)

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Leonard Weaver - Makes The Cut.

1 year ago Leonard Weaver had it all. He was a fan favorite. He was on a competitive team that was going places. He was being groomed to replace Mack Strong as the starter. The road to opportunity opened up like a four lane highway, and Leonard without a care in the world was driving alone with the top down and his hair blowing in the wind, right down the center. 1 year later, Leonard Weaver barely made the team. It doesn't even seem possible, but there it was. The fall from grace can be a short unfair trip. At the beginning of the 2006 season Weaver suffered a high ankle sprain and was out for the entire year. This preseason found Weaver fumbling, rusty and unremarkable. The 2007 version of Leonard Weaver came out flatter then an anorexic teenager. But lets stop and think about this for a minute. Is it realistic to expect Weaver to just pick up where he left off a year ago? How many people can leave their job, face months of rehab and return a year later as though nothing happened? Not many. But Weaver made the final cut, and I am delighted with the Seahawks for not giving up on him, and believing in him like some of us fans do.

This new chance for Weaver is like a rebirth. I think he needs an image make-over to go with his return to grace. Weaver has been nicknamed several things, Dream Weaver, Mister Sandman and a few others, but none of them really stuck. The act of stiff arming a defender has also been referred to as many different things but only one has really stuck. Baptism, this has never made any sense to me. The dictionary describes a baptism as a religious sacrament marked by the symbolic use of water. I'm missing the connection... Which makes me wonder if the original creator of the term was thinking "faith healing" but saying baptism out of confusion, as a faith healing sometimes ended with a palm to the forehead of the recipient, who was then caught by members of the mesmerized crowd standing behind them. But you see, even the faith healers were mimicking the the early actions of the Exorcist, who when performing the ceremony to rid the poor helpless soul of the demons therein, would end this grand specter with a hard palm thump to the forehead.

Whether the ceremony itself removed the demon, or the poor wretched recipient decided one hard thump to the forehead was all the exorcising they needed to see, remains a mystery. But you can't argue with results.

Weaver needs to return to form and deliver these blows that drew the admiration of all us fans. He needs to run like a wild man and hang onto the ball like a fat man rescuing a pizza from a burning Domino's. We believe in you Leonard. We know you can do it, you know you can do it.

Welcome back, Leonard "The Exorcist" Weaver

Leave Comment

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Citizen K Likes This™ Award 8/25/07

Living a few miles from the Washington State Penitentiary, Citizen K naturally likes seeing things well executed. It’s actually been a couple years since Walla Walla residents have been treated to an episode of Ye Merrie Grainfield Hanging, but as far as Citizen K is concerned, the Seahawks punished the Vikings capitally Saturday night.

Like the villain in Candyman, this game was a mirror image of last week’s drubbing in Green Bay; the Packers were portrayed by the Seahawks, while the role of hapless patsy was filled by the Vikings. Citizen K likes the action of catharsis, (though he rather dislikes the word itself,) and Saturday’s game was quite effective in that regard. It purged from Seahawk fans’ short-term memory both the aforementioned big dump the Hawks excreted in GB, and the ridiculous ending to a frustrating game against Minnesota last season. Citizen K likes (as in detests) old clichéd phrases like “revenge is a dish best served cold,” though Matt “hew” Hasselbeck apparently lives by this precept. In response to Henderson’s taking out his knee last year Matt—in this game—did: absolutely nothing. However, Citizen K has a sneaking suspicion that the next time these two teams match up there is going to be a certain Viking defender making his way off the field flat on his back, hovering a yard above the grass on a peculiar flying carpet known as a “stretcher,” his knee inexplicably throbbing and sporting cleat marks that mysteriously match those beneath a pair of Hassel-hooves. How did this happen? No one will ever know.

Like the manager of a car radio retail/installation franchise, Citizen K expects success with the receivers. It could be said that sales figures for Saturday’s game overflowed expectations in that regard. With apologies to one-time Seahawk wideout Louis Clark, Citizen K believes this year’s receiving crew should be known as the “Corps of Uncovery” (as in, they can’t be covered.) Almost every successful drive by the Hawks contained at least one long, and/or clutch, pass play, which warmed the cockles of Citizen K’s heart, (though thankfully stopping short of raising the temperature of the hearts of his cockle…) Citizen K especially liked the receiving efforts of: Engram, Branch, and Obomanu, the first of whom looks as prescient as ever with his routes, the middle of whom, if nothing else, has natty gloves, and the latter of whom is going to be amazing soon.

France’s Marie-Therese might have believed the Seahawks are able to subsist on lesser fare—(“let them eat cake!”)—but in reality their eventual success will be reaped more by a diet consisting more of turnovers than any other type of flour-based dessert product. The Seahawks Saturday were the apple of Citizen K’s eye, as they picked up one more turnover than the Vikings. In this game, unlike last week, the Seahawks won the Battle of the Turnovers, (also the probable title of the sequel to Dr. Seuss’s Cold War classic, the “Butter Battle Book.”) Minnesota came out on offense looking like Crispin Glover on Letterman—nervous, unprepared, and tripping balls. Like a virginal teenage boy contending with a bra while going for third base, the Vikings fumbled the first snap. The Seahawks then, like said innocent lad’s experienced older brother, rapidly took over the task and eventually scored, knocking a long one through the coltish uprights. As Colin Cowherd has pointed out, the teams that win the turnover tally are generally the top teams in the league. Citizen K likes laughing at Colin Cowherd for some of the garbage he’s uttered, but he thinks Cowherd has a point there.

Like a car in need of a ring and valve repair, Seahawk defensive backs were knocking all over the place against the Vikings. For his effort Citizen K liked Deon “The Great Communicator” Grant, whose omnipresence was downright Peterson-esque, and who, like Jimmy Page, laid down a couple mean licks; (though, dissimilarly, he did not suffer a “communication breakdown.”) Citizen K’s greatest Defensive like of the night, though, would have to be Marcus “Cougar Pride” Trufant, who—like Lindsay Lohan—knocked down a couple, traveled everywhere at top speed, and banged hard into things all night long. Citizen K anticipates a Rosie O’Donnell-sized season by this soon-to-be free agent, until teams wise up and stop throwing his way. Citizen K also liked the efforts of Plankton Wilson and Kevin “Calvin” Hobbs, the former of whom forced the Vikings to settle for a FG late in the first half with a timely knockdown, and the latter of whom made a huge play that totally Men-In-Blacked Citizen K’s memory of last year’s 95 yard freakshow run by Chester “Bo Jackson” Taylor, (during which, as the always erudite Steve Raible noted, “I just about swallowed my Adam’s apple!” Ha ha! Funny stuff, Johnny Carson,) with a sweet interception and return 39 yards for the score to seal the evening’s fun.

Like the WWE remake of the ‘90s transvestite classic, Citizen K loves a good “Kicking Game.” Josh “The 30 Year Old Virgin” Brown showed he’s already in midseason form; he deftly deposited several field goals and extra points between the bars like a Cuban prison guard dispensing a meager lunch of rice and grubs to his collection of activists.

Citizen K, as polar opposite of the brewmaster of Weinhard’s Private Reserve, values consistency. In the case of the Seahawks’ offense, this means Mack Strong is starting at fullback, and that Shaun Alexander is running the ball well behind him. Given Stiffarm Weaver’s mess of mistakes against the Packers, Mack could reclaim his starting role with a good game against the Vikes. Citizen K thinks he did. Like a female discoer at the Roxbury he fielded numerous passes, but unlike the brothers Butabi he converted most of them. Shaun “Glass Slippers, Iron Hands” Alexander finally had his first good “vintage 2005” run of the preseason, and also converted a score, though he still sounded a little tentative. (We hope that, like a deer hunter’s million-candlepower spotlight, perhaps he’ll “turn it on in the season.”) In any case, Mack opening pre-stomach-stapling Star-Jones-sized holes for Shaun is a proven recipe for success for the Hawks, and it’s nice to see the rushing contraption assembled and once again operative.

Like uncommonly patient employees at Wal-Mart’s Customer Service, Citizen K loves multiple long returns. Ben Obomanu served as the dissatisfied fabric customer Saturday night, claiming a couple kicks “just didn’t fit right,” and returning them—exchanging them for much longer yardage. In Oboe, Plankton, Na-Bur and Apple Juice (Seneca) the Seahawks have a quartet of potentially outstanding return guys. To help their cause against the Vikings the Seahawk blocking wizards cast a spell of protection around their returners, which was performed with Nadia Comaneci-like poise and perfection. Fans of penalties went home disappointed, as the Seahawks special teams were squeaky, Alex P. Keaton—Rudi Huxtable—clean.

Citizen K likes the Seahawks’ offensive line, the “Life Insurance Salesmen,” whose “long-range passing protection coverage” enabled several big gains by the offense. They opened more holes than mine rescue teams in Utah, (and were 100% more successful, as well.) Their cohesion, like Monica Lewinsky’s technique after completing her term as Presidential aide, was much improved.

Anagrams:

Mewelde Moore (AKA the guy with the dumbest name in the NFL): Remodel Me Owe, Mole Deer Meow, Moor Eel Mewed, More Weed Mole

Bennie Joppru: Up Inborn Jeep, Peon Prune Jib, Rejoin Pub Pen

Seneca Wallace: Cancel Seal Awe, Wee Canal Scale, Cancel Ease Law

Ryan Longwell: Well Nylon Rag, Now Rally Glen, Nary Well Long

Tarvaris Jackson: Caviar Knots Jars, Jots Irk Caravans, Victor Sank Rajas, Java Can Irks Rots

Maurice Morris: Racism Our Mire, Immure Corsair, Rare Sour Mimic, Smarmier Curio, Racier Sumo Rim, Mi Mirror Sauce, Rim Curious REM, Mimic Us Roarer, Mice Air Rumors, Mom Curries Air, Music Ire Armor, Rim Of Sumac Ire

Leave Comment

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Alans D.O.G: Preseason Week 3 vs Vikings

(Opens up attic)

"Come on...there up here somewhere. Well, lets hand out some D.O.G.'s!"

Yes, boys and girls, its time for another installment of Alan's Drive of the Game.

Now, readers of 12SS know my opinion of the preseason. However, I've beaten that dead horse to the point where it actually kicked me, so we'll just move on. It was great to see the Seahawks break out and just dominate someone. Sure, its the Vikings, and its helped by the fact that they fumbled on the first play of the game, I'm going to take it.

There was a drive in the contest that had it all: clock control, balance, a touchdown, and the starters were even involved. That would be the first touchdown of the day for the Seahawks.

The essentials: 9 plays, 5:04, 74 yards. Shaun Alexander, one yard touchdown, 16-7 Seattle.

Why its the D.O.G.: I'm dubbing it the "finally touchdown" as in "we finally scored a touchdown after marching circles around the Vikings." Come on boys, Josh Brown has 54 yard field goals to make to beat the Rams this season...lets not wear him out now! At any rate, four runs and five passes made up the drive, all of them going forward, including three plays that went over 10 yards. Plus, there are concerns about Marcus Pollard at TE going into this season. He had three catches alone on this drive, meaning that Hasselbeck is already looking for him and finding him.

A close runner up to the D.O.G. is Seneca Wallace and Ben Obomanu going Jason Bourne (he fights WITH A PEN!) on the Vike's secondary for a 57 yard pass play. Why isn't it the D.O.G.? Because I don't want to live in a world where Wallace to Obumanu is the Seahawks' premier passer-reciever combo.

But, since its the preseason, and the back-ups finish what the starters...um, started. We'll let Obomanu hold the ECBR for Pollard.

Till next week,

Alan

Leave Comment

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Citizen K Likes This™ Awards for 8/18/07

Citizen K apologizes in advance for the relatively low quality of this post. He has been ill, and his mind is working as well as the Seahawks’ offensive schemes against the Packers…

The Grilling in Green Bay was over as soon as the Seattle offense took the field, lacking both its top two players and its bookend starting offensive linemen. The results were unfortunately predictable, and the Seahawks’ soon punitive transportation, at the hands of the Packers, to the region colloquially identified as “the woodshed” was rapid and thorough. Citizen K cannot remember the last Seahawks game about which, on the surface anyhow, it was so difficult to discern any inkling of goodness. Citizen K will try to find something to like, which is hard because his prevailing opinion is that he made a huge mistake in spending three hours of an otherwise perfectly good Saturday evening witnessing the worst performance on grass since Up In Smoke VIII — “Gateway to Ganja” (sample dialogue: Cheech: “Man, Tom, I am sure high!” Chong: sits on sofa with glazed eyes, mouthing “you said it, man”—except no sound comes out.) (Actually, the latter is a pretty fair depiction of how Citizen K likely appeared while watching this “game.”)

Citizen K likes it when the Seahawks are able to conceal their weaknesses. Sometimes they’re successful—like when they used Pete Hunter in the 2006-’07 playoffs and actually beat the Dallas “Fo’ Reals, We Won The Super Bowl a Couple Times” Cowboys with him out there. Usually, however, this type of attempted deception meets with as much eventual success as did the Versailles Treaty in preventing future war in Europe. Against the Packers, their weaknesses were exposed from their first drive on offense:

• 1s & 10. Weakness—little depth at QB (pun oh so intended.) 3 WR set, Deion Branch is as wide open as Britney with the gay guy in the hot tub. Wallace tries to hit him, but ball is typically tipped at the line.

• 2nd & 10. Weakness—halfback has metal mitts. Wallace throws a suprisingly great pass on an out to Alexander, hitting him directly in his weak spot—his hands. He typically drops it.

• 3rd & 10. Weakness—no true backups at offensive tackle. As Wallace drops back to throw, Tom Ashworth is beaten more completely than was Voltaire by the chevalier de Rohan’s hired thugs. Wallace is sacked, providing a fitting consummation to an abortive drive by the visitors. August 18 is the apparent new Groundhog Day, as this pathetic event repeated itself numerous times thereafter. Citizen K likes good offensive line play—such as the brand the Hawks pulled off last week in San Diego—but he came away from this game with the same mindset as an attendee of a Spice Girls reunion tour concert or an American discussing Congress: “they’re still wearing the uniforms, and are moving around rapidly, but I can’t really tell if they’re doing anything useful or not!”

(And stick a fork in Ashworth—he’s farking done.)

Late in the game Verne Lundquist stated, “well, if you like Lambeau Leaps and turnovers, this is your night.” Thus, this was obviously not a Hawk fan’s night. Citizen K likes Seahawk football, especially when it’s fast, smart, and penalty-free. Thus he pretty much did not like anything about the game, especially the penalty part. Unlike undeported illegal immigrants in the United States, the vast majority of the Seahawk kick and punt returns were actually called back because of their unlawfulness. This was a 1918 Global Influenza-level pandemic amongst the special teamers, and very unappreciated by viewers such as Citizen K. Every single return of any merit, including a couple by new CitK faves Ben “D-Jack Was Too Short And Always Injured And What’s More, He Dove Backwards” Obomanu and Josh “Plankton” Wilson was called back. This rash of felonious behavior might be explained by team’s proximity to Mark “Seriously, Officer, How Could She Only Be 15 With Big Ol’ Titties Like That?” Chmura’s old stomping grounds. In any case, the unit appeared more “special” than Special, and has a lot of work to do.

Enough negativity!-—Citizen K loves takeaways by the defense, and this game was awash in them. The fact that they were against the Seahawks, though, tarnishes their remarkableness to some degree. In fact, Citizen K would prefer that his favorite team refrain from such benevolent behavior, so reminiscent of France in its “defense” against German advances in 1940. Finally free of the “we take it then give it right back on the next play” see-saw that characterized the first preseason game in San Diego, the Seattle offense was given the opportunity to turn over a new leaf. Unfortunately, that “new leaf” was almost as ineffective its scion, though, impressively, the Hawks were this time able to stumble through as many as two or three offensive plays before coughing up the ball, (in large part due to the poignant “gay old man character on The Family Guy” effort on the part of Tom “Gay Old Man Character on The Seahawks” Ashworth.) Citizen K is gratified both that Jones is already signed long-term and that Locklear is still a relatively unproven commodity, as otherwise this game would’ve driven up their potential salaries by at least $3 million apiece. Boo, backups—woot, starters!

That being said, Citizen K grooved on the sole offensive play that was any good by the Seahawks, the touchdown run by Maurice “2008 AF2 MVP” Morris. On that effort, Leonard “One Successful Stiff-Arm So Far, And Counting” Weaver made a Mack Strong-caliber lead block, taking out a linebacker as well as a lineman, and springing “MauMo” for the uncontested score. The play was “sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb” (Psalm. 19:10) but sadly was basically the only highlight on the night for the Hawks.

Citizen K Liked: Baraka, Tapp, the “Demonic Duo” of Trufant & Jennings, Josh Brown, “The Obelisks” Spencer & Sims,, “Mau-Mo,” the return team, and resting the starters—(never to early to get ready for a Super Bowl run.)

[Comments taken in SeahawkBlue Forums]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Good morning, and welcome to the Citizen K Likes This Award for the 2007 NFL season. For the uninitiated, this is a almost-weekly column of things Citizen K liked about the most recent game played by the Seahawks, written in third person with a high level of tongue-in-cheekiness, a smattering of clever nicknames, arcane similies, highbrow references, and the imminent potential for covert vulgarity. This will be the third--(and hopefully best)--season for which Citizen K has distributed his Awards, formerly found on the newly-schizophrenic 12SeahawksStreet. To that end, Citizen K has carved his WSU distance course load in half, to one lonely class, that he might be able to more fully concentrate on the Seahawks; (priorities, priorities...) On with the Awards!

Like a careful auto mechanic, Citizen K likes easing in the starters. Against San Diego this was accomplished with bountiful success. Hasselbeck looks ready to start the season. The starting offense smoothly guzzled yardage like high-grade coke up the nostrils of Lindsay Lohan. Then, again like LiLo, they scored, and subsequently were done for the day. Luckily for all Seahawk fans, that's where the similarity ends; (now that Jerramy Stevens has left the team, that is...)

Citizen K absolutely loves the obvious being stated, and therefore was greatly anticipating the salient stylings of one "Johan Maddner" (his Atlanta STD clinic alter ego.) However, Madden was apparently also easing into the season, for he provided little in the way of his characteristic "it's called a pass play 'cause the quarterback passed the ball"-type statements. In fact, to the contrary, Madden actually had some rather perceptive comments on the team, including:
• The Seahawks are one of the top three teams in the NFC, possibly the best one.
• There's a strong possibility Leonard "Mr. Versatility" Weaver will unseat Mack Strong as starting FB.
• The defensive ends are not set--Sackmaster Tapp might beat out Admiral Fisher as starter.
Very impressive 2007 debut by Madden!

Citizen K likes the cinematic classic, Home Alone. Thus, he was quite gratified to find out its pint-sized star, Macauley Culkin, is apparently on the rebound from his recent substance-addled existence, and is emerging as an NFL kicker with the alias "Nate Kaeding." He's even abandoned the sluglike indigo bags beneath his eyes! Go Mac!

Citizen K likes the Seahawks receiving corps. Deion "D-Jack Who?" Branch made a sweet TD catch in traffic on a pinpoint huck by Matt "Hasselback" (why, oh why, Al Michaels, can you never pronounce his name correctly?!) D.J. "DJ Hackett" Hackett and Nate "Next Door Na-Bur" Burleson were hardly present, though Hackett did make a nice recovery to run back and tackle a Charger who picked off Wallace after practically KobeBryanting him (Hackett) to get the ball. The big surprise--replacing Hackett as Citizen K's Favorite Up & Coming Receiver™--was Ben Obomanu. From the moment he entered the game he was all over the field making plays--especially in the Hawks' first drive of the fourth quarter--including a Spiderman-esque one-handing of the ball for an amazing TD snag on that drive. Citizen K likes Bobby Engram and Burleson, but one of their jobs is definitely in jeopardy for next season. It's awesome to think that if another untimely injury occurs amongst the receivers, Obomanu is waiting in the wings like John Wilkes Booth, ready to cap Lincoln's ass (err, make catches in NFL games, as the case may more accurately be.)

Citizen K likes incredible coincidences... Citizen K's wife and offspring were returning from a trip to Seattle while he watched the game, so he was free to relax in the living room with a celebratory glass of Merlot. Inevitable maneuver: wine gets knocked over, flooding new living room carpet. Incredible coincidence: ever the obliging housemate, Citizen K had been folding towels between plays. Within three seconds: Wine glass righted, towels grabbed, puddle sopped, rug (and Citizen K) saved. Astonishing. Citizen K liked that, a lot.

Citizen K must have old-West cow thieves in his lineage, because he absolutely loves rustling. No, not "Ruskell"--(whom Branch was touting to Andrea Kramer while at the same time subtly throwing D-Jack and Stevens under the bus,) or "hustling"--(which Patrick "Wistrom Jr." Kerney did a whole lot of,) or even "bustling"--(though 19th century hotties with falsified 50" hips are strangely compelling indeed,) but "rustling"--as in the dry swish of cheerleaders' pom-poms. Citizen K had the surround sound jacked up for the game, and every time the Charger Cheapos (or whatever their crew is called) were shown at chest-up close-up, the festive noise of their poms was overbearingly audible. Perhaps NBC is attempting to keep up with Fox's many broadcast innovations--(albeit, thankfully not that mind-numbing dancing/flexing animated robot)--by installing microphones in new strategic locations, allowing home viewers the pleasure of hearing stadium sounds they had never previously been privy to. Along with placing mics in the cheerleaders' poms, Citizen K would like to have them implanted in: the end zone pylons (for fascinating "thwack" sounds,) certain hot-dog warming machines, the Back Judge's penalty flag, restroom hand-dryers, an infant fan's pacifier, the centers' butt-cracks (to better hear the QB; assorted collateral disquietude can be edited out on-the-fly,) and, best of all, in the cheerleaders' bras, where the Flipperish squeakings of shifting silicone could provide a soothing rhythmic counterpoint to the savage action on the field. Make it happen, NBC!

As is (possibly) the case for Ricky Martin, adequate protection is a must for the Seahawks to succeed in the field. On Sunday they got this in droves. In Hasselbeck's series the starting line was almost perfect, allowing him time to find the receivers and opening big holes for the runs. When Seneca came in, so did some backups, yet the pocket still managed to allow him to emerge virtually unscathed. Great game by the entire line crew. On the other hand, San Diego's line was, like Paris Hilton, repeatedly penetrated through all available gaps by the Seahawks defense. Several huge blasts were laid upon Charger QBs by onrushing, virtually untouched Hawks, especially Leroy "2-Sacks In 2006" Hill and Darryl "On" Tapp.

This is getting long, and Citizen K's training-camp fingers are growing weary from the task, so he'll try to wrap it up. Additional Likes go out to: the D-line, Weeks, the backup linebackers, Morris, Jew-Peat, Josh "Holmgren Couldn't Remember My Name In His Interview" Wilson, Trufant, and Plackemeier.

It's customary for Citizen K to end the Awards with a few anagrams of players' names, but he's too lazy to do that for this initial offering. Perhaps next week.

[Comments taken in SeahawkBlue Forums]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Time Runs Out For West Coast Wizard ...

The orchestrator of the West Coast Offense has lost his battle to leukemia at the age of 75. Bill Walsh, the revered coach who revolutionized offenses into precision scoring teams and caused panic among defensive coaches, will forever be immortalized as a wizard among coaches. Knute Rockne, Vince Lombardie and now Bill Walsh will stand up as coaches that changed the game of football - RIP.

Mistaken by many as the innovator of the West Coast Offense. In reality he built the schemes based upon the teachings of Al Davis, Paul Brown and Sid Gilman. He then added his own innovations such as short dropbacks and unique receiving routes. He borrowed ideas and then perfected them.

Coach Walsh rejuvenated a pathetic San Francisco team that went 2-14 prior to his arrival and transformed them into a perennial 3 time Super Bowl winner and owner of a 102-63-1 won/loss record.

Mike Holmgren, coach of the Seahawks runs the most purist form of the West Coast Offense today and it is quite fitting for him to offer up his remembrance of Walsh. Coach Holmgren says of Walsh, "For me personally, he gave me my chance to coach in the NFL. He took a chance on me. I was four years removed from high school and that usually doesn’t work that way. He was hard on me and I was mad at him a fair amount as an assistant coach. Looking back on it now, he was my mentor and then later in the years he became my friend.".

Ty Willingham coach of University of Washington, “The world lost a great man in Bill Walsh. He had a tremendous impact on me, both personally and professionally. Coaches throughout all levels of football have lost an innovator and teacher who had a truly significant impact on the game. Very few people will be able to say they were able to change the course of history. Bill’s development in the minority coaching program at the collegiate and professional levels literally changed the face of football. His sphere of influence was significantly greater than any coach of his time. He will truly be missed.”.

The Bill Walsh legacy is littered throughout the NFL. From ESPN, "Even a short list of Walsh's adherents is stunning. Seifert, Mike Holmgren, Dennis Green, Sam Wyche, Ray Rhodes and Bruce Coslet all became NFL head coaches after serving on Walsh's San Francisco staffs, and Tony Dungy played for him. Most of his former assistants passed on Walsh's structures and strategies to a new generation of coaches, including Mike Shanahan, Jon Gruden, Brian Billick, Andy Reid, Pete Carroll, Gary Kubiak, Steve Mariucci and Jeff Fisher.".

Walsh has been credited for popularizing the scripting of plays, use of laminated play sheets, and for the style of drills used in today's practices.

He was voted into the Hall of Fame in 1993. He was a broadcaster, general manager, friend, husband and father.

He will be missed.....

Gladiator Hawk

[Comments taken in SeahawkBlue Forums]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Dad and Me with the Seahawks Day

On Tuesday, July 10th my daughter and I traveled north for Dad and Me with the Seahawks Day at Qwest Field. After being serenaded by members of the Blue Thunder drum line in the ninety degree heat, our limited edition Dad and Me hats gained us entry to the main concourse of Qwest for registration. We were introduced to our Seahawks hosts for the day, misters Paul Johns, Craig Terrill, Marcus Tubbs, and Jim Zorn. A short video introduction led to the collected 250 children and parents being led to the Qwest Field playing surface for stretching and calisthenics with Johns. We were then split into three groups, and began the day’s activities.

As part of group B we were first assigned to Marcus Tubbs and assistants for drills in the obstacle course and the 40 yard dash. Needless to say, up close Marcus is a way big dude, and a lengthy knee brace extended below his cargo shorts. Good clean fun ruled the day as numerous four to eight year old boys and girls, dads and moms, and grandpas plowed through and around the agility drills of the obstacle course. Marcus seemed very good natured. I can then proudly report that I smoked my daughter (age 12) in the 40; 6.15 with one try, if you must know.

Group B then moved into the Hawks locker room for a session with Craig Terrill. Now, as those of you who have taken the Qwest tour know, gaining access to the visitor’s locker room is relatively easy – the home locker room is a massively big deal. Even better, certain players had chosen to leave personal affects in their lockers. My daughter got to try on Josh Brown’s helmet - SA’s jersey and shoulder pads were there for the wearing, as well. Marcus Trufaunt’s Under Armor shirts had small padding modules on the upper shoulder surfaces, perhaps reflecting his sensitivity following shoulder surgery. Following the departure of Robbie Tobeck, Terrill seems to be filling the role of resident smart-ass nicely, and his locker room commentary was quite candid.

Then it was back to the field for passing drills with Jim Zorn. After demonstrating basic throwing technique with his son Isaac, the Ring of Honor QB turned to the crowd and, amazingly, selected my daughter for a personal tutorial, along with three others. I was f**king stunned! Like the trooper she is, my daughter got up in front of the crowd, and chucked the ball. The Z Man gave great advice (imagine a table around your midsection, keep your elbow above shoulder, etc.), and by the fifth attempt she threw a scorchin' spiral to Isaac. The crowd applauded, life was awesome.

After a quick, informal dinner featuring Jones Soda’s new Qwest friendly flavors, and much chiding regarding my daughter’s stellar performance, there was an autograph session with Terrill, Tubbs, and Zorn. We received complimentary bags of swag (Hawks mini footballs, 2007 yearbook, Lofa posters), and were then off into the cooling Seattle evening. All in all, it was truly an afternoon’s experience that my daughter and I will cherish forever – or, at least as long as she keeps her elbow above her shoulder while throwing. Thank you Qwest, and the Seahawks.

[Comments taken in SeahawkBlue Forums]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Thank You Terrell!

Thanks Terrell! For the last 6 months we the people have not had to put up with any of your stupidity or your fat mouth running on and on about crap that only pertains to Terrell Owens.

It has surly been refreshing to not have to hear your assessment of other players sexual preferences (Jeff Garcia) Or hear about you fighting with people in the locker room (Hugh Douglas).

Thank you for sparing us another lecture on what a classless organization the great Terrell Owens plays for (Philadelphia Eagles), or what a pussy they have for a quarterback (Donovan McNabb).

Thank you for not subjecting us to another "work out" in front of your residence so the press and all of us adoring fans can rest assured you are keeping in shape while you are suspended for the latest trouble that your stupid ass is in.

Kudos to you for not forcing anymore sleepless nights on us while we worried about poor Terrell laying in the hospital after overdosing on pain killers (poor...poor, Terrell).

Us adoring fans also appreciate the fact that you haven't spit on any other players (DeAngelo Hall) recently as well! Never having sniffed the playoffs, this franchise took a major step backward in perhaps one of the worse blunders in NFL trading history - trading Tony Dorsett for a package of stiffs.

In that fateful year of 1982, Joe Paterno and the Penn State Nittany Lions raced to National Championship primarily through the accomplishments of one - Curt Warner. Most analysts of the day, had compared him to Dorsett. As luck would have it, the Seahawks were in position to make Warner their first round pick that year.

Curt Warner had a brilliant rookie campaign accumulating 1449 rushing yards, 42 receptions for another 335 yards, and scoring 14 touchdowns. The team made the playoffs for the first time in team history with a 9-7 record. Seattle faced Denver and then Miami, beating them both to earn an AFC Championship berth versus the Oakland Raiders. A franchise achievement never matched or exceeded until the 2005 team reached the Super Bowl.

View Warner exploits on the field

The 5'11" 205 pound rookie running back was annoited as the AFC Offensive Player of the Year and earned his first of three Pro Bowl selections. After the tenth carry of following season he sustained an ACL injury to his knee. Although he never fully regained his elite speed and elusiveness, he did manage to recuperate and return to complete a 7.5 year career playing his last 7 games for the St Louis Rams. He held the team record for most yards in a single game with 207 yards against the Chiefs in 1983, since broken by Shaun Alexander in 2001.

Games 100

Rushing Attempts 1698

Rushing Yards 6844

Rushing TDs 56

Receptions 193

Receiving Yards 1467

Receiving TDs 7

The organization recognized his achievements in 1994 by inducting him into the Seahawks Ring of Honor.

Where is he now?

Curt and his wife Ana have 3 sons: Jonathon 14, and 13 year old twins Austin and Christian and reside in Vancouver Washington. He is the owner and operator of Curt Warner Chevrolet in Vancouver. He enjoys playing golf particularly in charity events. He has participated in Athletes for Autism charity golf outing last year. He does watch NFL games and follows the Seahawks. Reviled rivalry - Da Raiders. He said he is very open to penning his name on pictures, jerseys, footballs, and other items. Just drive down to his car dealership in Vancouver Washington and inquire. An item or two is acceptable whereas a dozen is going over the line. I'm sure he would even autograph the new car you bought from his dealership.

Born as Curtis Edward Warner on March 18, 1961. Remember when the Seahawks were in the AFC West and they had to oppose him? I recall thinking how it seemed unfair that the Chiefs had this bulldozer for a running back. How do you tackle a guy like that? We were fortunate to have Commodore Cortez (Kennedy) in the middle of that defensive line.

Christian Okoye earned several Pro Bowl berths while starring for the Kansas City Chiefs in the late 80's and early 90's. In 1989 he led the NFL with 1480 yards and 12 touchdowns.

He was virtually unstoppable on 3rd down and 1 yard to go, as was Alexander in 2005, running behind the likes of Jones and Hutch. I'm running here, you might want to get out of the way if you don't want to get hurt.

Where is he now?

I recently learned that Christian Okoye was cast as one of the swashbucklers on the reality tv show called Pirate Master. Anyone ever watch Pirate Master? I have never seen this show.

Okoye at 45, was the oldest cast member. What NFL defenders were incapable of doing that his fellow cast members could ..... push the 270 pound Okoye back for a loss. The Nigerian Nightmare was booted out of the game after only 6 days on the ship. The final scene was of Okoye floating on a plank of wood in the darkness of the open ocean with nothing but a lamp. This compares very closely to the treatment that Gene Upshaw and the NFL Players Association has displayed to it's retired players from the 60's, 70's and 80's.

None of the other contestants was aware of his career in the NFL while he was on the show. This was what he wanted. If they asked he would have offered an honest offer.

At Pirate's Court Okoye elicited a speech very similiar the leadership he conveyed on the football field. "Fellow pirates. I love you guys, I love this ship," said Christian. "You know, many people have been complaining about the money they've been getting, that the portions are not very fair. The captain should make sure that his crew are happy. If you choose me to be the captain, I will not take 50%. I will not take 40%. I will not take 30%. If I don't make my crew happy, I'm not doing my job. So captain... How do you run the ship?"

Okoye grew up in Nigeria and venture to the United States to attend college at tiny Azusa Pacific. He want on to star for the Kansas City Chiefs. Since retiring, he has founded the Christian Okoye Foundation. This is a charitible organization chartered to capture the passion that children have for sports. His foundation draws upon at-risk under-priviledges youths to participate in hosted athletic clinics. He also owns a health and fitness clinic that sells protein powders and multi-vitamins. Barry Bonds is not a member of his clientele. Apparently Barry seeks other products.

Christian likes to jog, lift weights and golf. He presently resides in Rancho Cucumonga California.

Gladiator Hawk

[Comments taken in SeahawkBlue Forums]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

My Seahawk Blue POS Award Nomination

In the light of the NFL’s new code of conduct rule, It boggles the mind that the Cincinnati Bengal’s continue their devil may care, wild west style crime spree. At what point is the NFL going to decide that the swift foot of justice needs to find some asses? It is clear to any reasonable person with a granule of brain cells that this problem is apparently beyond the control of Bengal Management. The latest arrest of running back Quincy Wilson for disorderly conduct is pretty good testimony. But let’s have a look at what other problems they have encountered in the last year.

Johnathan Joseph CB possession of marijuana, Deltha O'Neal (CB) Driving while intoxicated, Reggie McNeal (WR) Resisting arrest, Matthias Askew (DT) Resisting arrest, Eric Steinbach (G) Boating under the influence, Chris Henry (WR) unlawful transaction with a minor (three counts), speeding, operating a vehicle under the influence, felony possession of a concealed firearm, possession of marijuana, Frostee Rucker (DE) Spousal battery, A.J. Nicholson (LB) Burglary, grand theft and Odell Thurman (LB) Driving while intoxicated.

I have no personal vendetta against the Bengals, I don’t love them and I don’t hate them. I just simply don’t understand what kind of Management allows this kind of crap on a team. They need a smack down, a reality check. If their players have an ounce of pride then they need to hold each other accountable, or we might as well throw them a basketball and sell them to Oklahoma. Lets review the NFL’s rule of conduct for persons charged with criminal activity:

Any Covered Person arrested for or charged with conduct prohibited by this policy will be required to undergo an immediate, mandatory clinical evaluation and, if directed, appropriate counseling. Maybe he has a thing for the soft touch and smooth massages of the Seahawks trainers. Or maybe he's just as good an insurance policy as that Trojan you've been carrying in your wallet since high school.

For whatever reason though, The Other White Meat just can't make it as a featured entree.

While Walter Jones was skipping training camps, in retaliation for being franchised, Pork Chop kept his left tackle position warm until Big Walt got tired of pushing his Escalade around and checked in for the regular season.

Slated to be the starting right tackle in 2005, a training camp injury once again sidelined Spare Rib, and Sean Locklear established himself as the starter during the epic Superbowl season.

Last year, Hamsteak was supposed to be the heir-apparent to the left guard position left vacant by the poison-pill pusher, Steve Hutchinson. Make that the err-apparent, because again, old Pork ended up with his medalions in a sling, and missed most of the season.

On the plus side, he's been in Mike Holmgren's offense for several years, and can step in at any position except center. On the minus side, chances are good that he'll twist and ankle or pull a hamstring just by stepping in.

He must have great pictures of someone high up in the Seattle organization, otherwise it's hard to understand how someone who has taken less game time snaps, than the number of body parts he has had snapped, can remain on the roster.

And with the way the Seahawks have cut ties with injured players at other positions, like Andre Dyson, Kelly Herndon and Josh Scobey, old Pork Chop may find out that nursing yet another pre-season injury just ain't Kosher.

[Comments taken in SeahawkBlue Forums]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Welcome to the Alba Bury-A-Seahawk Page!

Have you ever noticed that one store location in your local strip mall that never seems to be able to maintain a tenant? One month it's a Builder's Square, the next it's a Circuit City and the following month it's vacant again.

Well, I seem to have the same effect on the SeahawkBlue Adopt-A-Seahawk program!

As site historian and perennial alba-agitator ADP will quickly point out, it all started with reserve full back Chris Davis in 2005. Davis was coming off a knee injury and already a long shot to make the team due to some guy named Wiburt Tissue, but he played his college ball at Syracuse so I thought I'd adopt him as my own. Not long after the ink was dry on the birth certificate, Mr. Davis was asked to brush off his SU diploma and begin life after football.

Not to be dissuaded by this Sudden Infant Done syndrome, another running back on the roster caught my eye with his full speed ahead approach and propensity for the vicious hit, so Josh Scobey was welcomed to the family...and quickly fumbled the opening kick off of the 2005 season! But much like his adoptive father's stick-to-it-ness, Josh kept running straight ahead and hitting like a freight train, and picked up one of the first Moonlight Graham awards for his efforts. A little more than a season later, Josh is now playing for the Buffalo Bills, and if things don't work out there, I may find that MGA trophy in a Western New York pawn shop.

Mainly because he was a heavy hitter who shared a birth month with me, and perhaps a subconscious effort to hedge my bets, I also adopted Kelly Herndon in the 2005 season too. As more and more fans called his play into question, like any good parent, I stood up for him and gave him my blind loyalty and support. Today, the Seahawks gave him his walking papers.

So like a black character in a serial killer flick, or the Anthony Edwards character in Top Gun, if you're a young Seahawk player and you see me and my adoption attorney coming your way, you know you're dead meat!

For the good of the organization, I've decided to live the rest of my Seahawk life childless, and just be a good uncle to the other adoptees. You know, the one that always has pockets full of candy and is willing to bounce the kids on his knee for an obscenely long time!

[Comments taken in SeahawkBlue Forums]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Tale of the Tape: Hasselbeck vs O'Donnell

This isn't a comparison of Superbowl quarterbacks Matt and Neil, but rather a tale of the tape to determine who would win the battle had push really come to shove between Rosie O'Donnell and Elisabeth Hasselbeck on the View.

And unlike comparing great athletes from different sports or different eras, there isn't much physical or statistical data on either of these women, so we're going to have to do our best using their Wikipedia profiles and some good imagination.

So if someone would please "ring the bell you pansy" we'll get right to the ABC Battle of the Network Stars:

Round 1: AGE
Hasselbeck: Born: May 28, 1977 (30)
O'Donnell: Born: March 21, 1962 (45)

While Rosie's profession as a stand-up comedian, not to mention her off the wall political views, has probably toughened her up to take a punch, you just can't discount youth, especially if the match goes the distance.

ADVANTAGE: Hasselbeck

Round 2: HEIGHT/WEIGHT
Hasselbeck: Unknown, but ideal!
O'Donnell: Unknown, but ideal for a defensive tackle

ADVANTAGE: O'Donnell

Round 3 - HOMETOWN
Hasselbeck: Cranston, RI
O'Donnell: Bayside, Queens

At first glance, you might be tempted to give the native NYer the edge over the blue-blood from the yacht club, but not so fast. After all, Rosie's from Queens, which isn't exactly the Bronx, and both areas are noted hotbeds for organized crime.

ADVANTAGE: PUSH

Round 4 - COLLEGE
Hasselbeck: Boston College
O'Donnell: Dickinson

Hasselbeck attended a school which is noteworthy for being a powerhouse in major sports over the years, herself captaining the softball team for two seasons. O'Donnell's school sounds like two things she wish she had.

ADVANTAGE: Hassebeck

Round 5 - WHERE THEY GOT THEIR START
Hasselbeck: Survivor
O'Donnell: Star Search

Let's see, Elisabeth's claim to fame is finishing fourth in a brutal contest of mental toughness, physical strength, shrewd negotiations, and endurance, all while wearing a bikini. Rosie hung with Ed McMahon and Dick Clark swilling beers and lighting farts.

ADVANTAGE: Hasselbeck

Round 6 - LIFESTYLE
Hasselbeck: Conservative working mother, with another on the way
O'Donnell: Liberal lesbian in a common law union with three children

While most men hear "lesbian" and immediately think of their favorite Penthouse pictorial on the subject, the stark truth is that Rosie is more of a poster girl for the lifestyle than Miss August. And while Mrs. Hasselbeck is certainly deliciously attractive, those conservative views would certainly keep her from ever engaging in something so torrid as an extramarital affair, or at least prevent her from enjoying it if she did!

ADVANTAGE: PUSH

Round 7 - CORNER MAN
Hasselbeck: Husband Tim, Father-in-Law Don and/or Brother-in-Law Matt
O'Donnell: The flaming pianist from her other talk show, Jon Stewart and/or Al Franken

Let's see, three professional athletes with NFL experience versus two Jews and a gay guy? Hmmmm...this one is tough.

ADVANTAGE: Hasselbeck

Round 8 - INTAGIBLES
Hasselbeck: Makes us horny
O'Donnell: Makes us laugh (some WITH her, some AT her)

ADVANTAGE: Hasselbeck

So you see that even though Rosie may seem like one of Mike Vick's pit bulls going up against Lady from the Disney movies, our fair young Ms. Hasselbeck has more than enough going her way to give that loud-mouthed dyke the bitch-slapping she so richly deserves!

[Comments taken in SeahawkBlue Forums]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Introducing the 2007 Seattle SeaGals!!!

Finally after many long hours of practice and fortitude, their hopes and dreams have been fulfilled. In Mike Sando's blog, he eloquently pointed out much more inferior the defense was in stopping the run when Tubbs was out. In his story Weighing Tubbs Impact the Seahawks gave up 42 yards more per game and .99 yards more per carry when Tubbs was sidelined.

The quality at defensive tackles trails off sharply after the top 3 DTs are taken in the draft. The Seahawks would be wise to put a bulls eye on Justin Harrell and trade up towards the top of round 2 to fit him for a Seahawks uniform.

The Tennessee Volunteer is tough as nails will play through pain as demonstrated when he put the team first playing rival Florida with a ruptured biceps tendon.

He is quick and explosive at the snap. His stats cloak his true value because he will occupy two blockers at the line of scrimmage, freeing up teammates to close in for the tackle. Justin is an outstanding at containing inside running plays. He has very good change of direction agility and can split double teams. His very strong weight room ethic, team first attitude, and battles until the whistle, which is why teammates look to Harrell for leadership.

He needs to work on his pass rushing, although he does show effective rip and club moves to penetration to the quarterback. He could improve his techniques with his hand placement to prevent blockers from getting underneath his pads. Package pick #55 with a player on the trading block, and Harrell will bring great value to the organization.

Meet your defensive tackle of the future -- Justin Harrell.

Gladiator Hawk

[Comments taken in SeahawkBlue Forums]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Gladiator Profiled for Seahawks - Cornerback

In our third installment of Gladiator Profiled for Seahawks, we turn our attention to the cornerback position. The buildup in the defensive secondary is quite evident already with the Hawks adding 2 safeties in Deon Grant and Brian Russell. Mike Holmgren has cited in this interview that he could use another cornerback.

The best fit for adding a cornerback would be Marcus McCauley a physical open field tackler with a reputation for taking on powerful running backs while also displaying the quickness needed to shut down speedy wide receivers. McCauley is big and fast, however he will be drafted in the 2nd round unfortunately.

NFL teams have a preference for running towards the left side of the defense. The coaching staff should investigate returning Trufant to his former role of left cornerback and swap Jennings to the right side. Hugh Millen has stated on KJR radio that at the end of the season, Jennings weight was in the 160s, a bit slight for a DB trying take on a running back at full steam, hence the move to the other side for him. No truth to the rumor that when Jennings turns sideways, he's mistaken for one of the yardlines. Trufant is in his free agent contract year and there is a need to prepare for the future as Trufant could walk following this season.

Usama Young offers great value as the Seahawks second pick (think trade) in the 4th round. Young is quick, has a solid frame and is a sure-handed tackler. He stands 5-11 weighs 195 and can fly through a 40 yard dash in 4.4 seconds. Young fits the mold for what the Seahawks need in the draft at cornerback. The Seattle Seahawks draft team came away very impressed after a recent visit with Usama. An accomplished defender albeit from a smaller school. Ruskell says that the Hawks are fortunate to have no glaring holes, so they have the opportunity to select players that they can develop into starters.

Usama Young has plenty of game experience since becoming a starter in his freshman season and finishing with 37 starts in 45 games. He is considered to be a shutdown corner and has great special teams potential. Has the Ruskell work ethic desired and demonstrated by him putting forth the extra hours for game preparation.

He could be more aggressive tracking the ball in flight. However he is a smart and instinctive player who can make the quick reads and instantly react to the play. Maintains good position on the receiver in man coverage. Has good recovery speed and turns with precision when looking for the ball. He is very effective in keeping plays in front of him playing in the zone and explodes out of his breaks to stay tight with the receiver.

He needs to build on his strength and play with more aggression when competing for the ball in a crowd. H is not considered a ball hawk. Introduce him to DB specialist coach Jim Mora, and he will develop into a very effective starter in the future.

Meet your new cornerback of the future -- Usama Young.

Gladiator Hawk

[Comments taken in SeahawkBlue Forums]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Gladiator Profiled for Seahawks - Guard

In our second installment of Gladiator Profiled for Seahawks, we turn our attention to the big uglies - offensive guard. Games are won and lost in the battle in the trenches. Our once formidable line is now ordinary, talented and young...yes, but in need of another ugly.

The best fit would be Ben Grubbs. Ben has power, intensity and athletic ability to be that next great dominant guard. He has good size at 310 pounds and great quickness. Seahawks expect their blockers to fan out in pass protections more than most teams, and getting to the second level defenders. They must have the athletic ability to excel in pulls and traps. This is where Grubbs is outstanding. Unfortunately he will be Tubbs opponent on game day. Ruskell would do well to trade and move up in the draft and he will, but the target will not be Grubbs. That is a topic for another day.

With Gray and Womack returning, the offensive line has a year to prepare the rookie for action. Argue if you will, however slotting a rookie with 2 other youngsters with only 16 starts between them in the interior, would cause opposing defenses to salivate.

Andy Alleman out Akron offers great value out in the 3rd round. He is projected to be selected at 77-90. He fits the mold for what the Seahawks need in the draft at offensive guard. Like Grubbs, Alleman is a former defensive lineman converted to guard and yes, he brings a little nasty to the line. He is a bit raw, however he will have the time to be groomed for his future role. Another small school prospect, but Ruskell has stated that they have no glaring needs thus providing the options to take players that they could develop into productive starters.

Alleman, developed his game growing up in the hotbed of football factories in Massillon Ohio, has been tabbed as one of the nations workout freaks. Alleman played right guard for Akron, struggled a bit early in 2006 and came on strong in the last half of the season.

Alleman can explode off the line and has the lateral slide agility to get out on the edge for pass protection. He is more of a technique style of drive blocker rather than a mauler. He maintains proper pad level to gain leverage and control his defender. He has good ability to seal off a would be tackler in running plays. Alleman is acutely aware for the blitz and picks up stunts quickly. Effective turning the corner on pulls and seeks out second level defenders as he takes good angles to engage defender.

Andy has only 2 years experience on the offensive side of the ball hence his need for time to develop more. Relies on his strength over technique, he is very strong. Needs to improve his footwork as he crosses his feet some and falls off his block. Needs to work on eliminating false starts. Given a year of good coaching plus mentoring from a grizzled vet Gray, Alleman will become productive at the right guard spot.

Meet your right guard of the future -- Andy Alleman.

Gladiator Hawk

[Comments taken in SeahawkBlue Forums]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Gladiator Profiled for Seahawks - Tight End

An essential ingredient in Mike Holmgren's version of the West Coast Offense, is that of the tight end position. A star performer is not needed, particularly when you have highly skilled QB, RB, and WRs. So what are the attributes that conspire to create the perfect all downs tight end and keep a defense guessing run or pass?

One of the keys to Holmgren's offensive system is to have the size and physical tools needed to secure the point of attack. Seattle has a diminuative set of receivers, hence a huge target with springs would induce mis-matches for a defense when reeling in the jump ball in the endzone. Coach Walrus prefers a TE who can stretch the field, opening up room for the RB or WRs to work within space in linebacker territory. The guy manning this position must possess sure hands to keep drives alive. An ability to "seal the edge" on the defensive end will enhance the running game. Finally, intelligence is highly sought because the WCO is intricate and challenging to assimilate. Which gladiator possesses these attributes and would be available for Ruskell to draft?

Kevin Boss out of Western Oregon offers great value in the 4th round. He is projected to be selected at 125-135 in the draft. He fits the mold for what is needed at tight end. He has 31 starts to his credit and played basketball in college. One year of grooming by Pollard and Boss will be very productive for years to come.

At 6-7, Boss is a huge target that can reach another 35 inches with his vertical jump. He has proven to be one of the most sure-handed receivers in the draft thus making the most critical of fans to forget about Jerremy Who. He can fly in the 40 yard interval in 4.71 seconds just as Mr. Who. Boss man weighs in at 252 lbs and could add 10 more lbs of bulk without loss of quickness.

Kevin uses his hands effectively to jolt the defender and get a clean release off of the jam. He has large hands, demonstrates great body control and leaping abilty to snag the ball at its high point. He can separate in the short area of the field and has valid speed to elude second level defenders to threaten the secondary. He has the loose hips to weave around linebackers. He has the power to break tackles and the stride to gain yardage after the catch. Very adept at adjusting his routes when the play breaks down. His agility allows him to contort his body to catch errant passes. He is a physical player who will win most fights for the ball in the air. Also, very alert to position himself beyond 1st down markers.

Kevin is very intelligent and needs minimum reps to understand plays. Playing collegiate basketball reduced the off-season training typically needed to learn the finer points of football. Probably needs 1 year of good coaching to improve his route running and become more precise in his cuts. However, he is very effective on his out and crossing patterns. He has recovered from a shoulder injury which caused him to miss 6 games last year, thus lowering his draft status to provide the Hawks great value in the 4th round.

Meet your tight end of the future -- Kevin Boss.

Gladiator Hawk

[Comments taken in SeahawkBlue Forums]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

Holmgren Discloses His View of the Offseason

Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren, has been re-charging his jets this offseason and is now fired up to begin what could be a very special season for the Hawks. Yesterday, he parked his motorcycle and spoke on the air at KJR radio with Dave Mahler and Hugh Millen. The Walrus disclosed his view of the current state of Seahawk Nation.

On what his position of where he is right now with his 2 year extension...

"When we made the decision to sign the 2 year extension, I thought long and hard about it. My biggest concern, and what we thought about most, was that you have to be fair to everybody. There was no sense in my signing any sort of extension if my heart wasn't in it, and with the idea that you didn't want to fulfill your contract. Having said that, I reserve the right after each season to make sure I'm fair with everybody. It doesn't make any sense at all, if after a season, I feel that I don't have the jets to keep going. It's not fair to anybody to keep going that way and fake it. I'm not going to do that.

Every year, we're going to look at it. I feel I've reached that point in my coaching life where if I can recharge the batteries quickly and it's going in the right direction and I'm helping, and they want me, I'm going to stick around. If I don't think I'm helping the cause too much, I'm going to have to re-evaluate it."

On how his family impacts his decision....

"My family is important to me. All of my daughters are moving to the Seattle area and we love it here. I'm not anxious to go anywhere else. I'm really not. The conversation we had and Kathy (wife) put it very bluntly. She said two things. 'You have to be healthy, for me to back this, and you still have to have the fire to do it right. Don't fake it'. I think that's a pretty good criteria, really. That's what I'm going to base any decision on. She's really supportive. She's been a great football wife over the years. At some point, it's going to end. I have no complaints. Football has been good to me."

On his working relationship with Tim Ruskell and his own aspirations of GM...

"Tim and I work very, very well together. When he and Tod Lieweike came aboard, it made the organization stronger. The management team we have is as good as it can be in the NFL. I had my own goals and aspirations, and I felt there was some unfinished business to take care of as the general manager/coach. My own ego gets involved there as well a little bit. I'm not saying I'm right, I'm just saying that's where I am. As far as how it's working right now, it's good. Everyone is going in the same direction. Everyone wants to win. Everyone is supporting each other the way they need to. Of course, it all starts with Paul Allen."

On will there be a void in his career if he doesn't become a GM again...

"I don't think so. Football has been very good to me. I have no regrets. You always want to do well as a coach and well as a GM. It was my first crack at being a GM and I think I would be better at it the next time. Better in hiring people. I have a much better idea of how that dynamic works, and what you need. Some of my decisions early on...I made a couple of mistakes. No question about it. That's what you hopefully learn from. But if I never got another chance to be a GM again - I'd be okay with it."

On his immediate assessment following the overtime loss to the Bears in the playoffs...

"First of all, let's break it down on what improvements would be required for 2007. We were going to look hard at the defense first. My feeling is that the offense, if we can stay healthy, we have people in place where we can move the football, for the most part. I did not feel there needed to be a dramatic overhaul of the offense. On defense, this was exaggerated because of our injuries in the secondary. We had to look at some of the things that were happening on defense. We got injured in the defensive line and in the secondary. Our linebackers were pretty solid. So, that's where our focus is going to be is with defensive line and secondary. I think in free agency, that is where we went."

On have they done everything they set out to do with the defense in free agency...

"I think there's room to grow. We did something differently this than we had done in previous years. We 'popped' early in what I call the 'feeding frenzy' period, which is that first week in free agency. The numbers these free agents sign for, just blow your mind. It is what it is. We were involved in that. In past years, we didn't get involved in the first week too much. We didn't usually have the money to do it and philosophically, we were trying to build something through the draft usually would just cherry pick a little bit in free agency. This year was different. There was a strategy to go hard and pop early on a couple of guys and that's what we did. We spent our money. Our shopping list, we took care of that. There will be some things that happen down the road in June, when the salary cap changes a little bit for us and we can add a couple of additional players. Basically, we are done."

On his thoughts concerning Ken Hamlin...

"First of all, it was a miracle that he played last year. I was very proud of him and happy for him because no one knew for sure if he could continue to play. I like Kenny a lot and he brought enthusiasm to our defensive unit but he did not have his best year last year. He missed tackles that he normally would make. He always guessed a little bit, but because of all the injuries in the secondary, he tried to do more than he had to do, and was out of position on occasion. Now what that had to do with the injury in his previous year, I could never tell you. He wanted to test the free agent market and the feeling in the building was that we had to overhaul our secondary. Aside from the injuries, it did not appear that we were getting better. In fairness to everyone, sometimes a new scene is good. Now, Jim Mora is going to coach the secondary, and we now have 2 new safeties in Deon Grant and Brian Russell to go along with our young corners."

On his thoughts of the cornerbacks...

"Well, I think Trufant is very solid. He is a good young player. Kelly Jennings is going to be fine. He had his highs and lows as you would expect a rookie to have. Herndon had his highs and lows. He's a bit of a lightning rod because the cornerback getting beat is more visible to the fan. Herndon is an excellent player and is a solid third corner. He plays the inside position very well. He had to play the outside until Kelly Jennings came along. I don't think you can have too many corners. Are we set there? I don't think so. Can we play the game? Yeah, we can play the game with what we have. We are going to look at the secondary in the draft."

On which position of the defense would he like to add a player...

"I would say cornerback. The way people that are opening their formations and throwing the ball around, people that play us (sic). If I put 4 wide receivers out there, very few people can match up straight on straight with 4 quality CBs cover 4 quality WRs. It's a valuable position. So, that's not necessarily a reflection on who we have right now."

On his thoughts with the defensive line and status of Marcus Tubbs...

When we lost Marcuss Tubbs...he's a big body in there who has some pass-rush ability as an inside player. Sometimes you can get the guys who play the draw very well, but they can't rush the passer. So when you get one who is big and can rush the passer, you've really got something going. We don't have a Reggie White or a Charles Haley that the other team would have to plan for that guy on every play. But as a result, we're high on sack totals. Everyone gets 4 or 5 sacks and they don't know where we're coming from, but we have to move a lot. When we lost Tubbs, we lost a presence inside. If he's okay, and we can get another big body in there, we will be okay. I saw Tubbs two days ago. He is feeling good and he is right on schedule, but you never know. He had a big-time surgery, so hopefully he can come back and play."

On present status of the defensive line given Kerney's acquisition and Wistrom's retirement...

"In a perfect world, if we would have been able to keep Grant Wistrom or talk him into staying, we would have had a nice little combination with 4 guys on DE. I would say that the needs between defensive end versus defensive tackle are about even."

On did he want Wistrom back...

"Yes. Now, Grant signed a huge contract. Grant and I had a great conversation about this. His body, he plays the game, he's undersized. The way he plays the game, he is all beat up at the end of every game. My hope was that he would accept a lesser salary and come back so we could rotate him. He gets 30-35 snaps per game. I could take it easy on him in training camp too. He brought something to the table for our team that was healthy. It was good. But he did not want to do that. What I appreciate about him was that he was very honest with me. He (Grant) said, 'Mike, I think I am done.' So what are you going to do?"

On his observations of the similarities between Kerney and Wistrom...

"They are very similar. They both have great motors. They are both team guys and they are both very unselfish. They both practice hard and they are tremendous people. The one difference, perhaps is that Kerney is more of a sack guy. By himself, Kerney will get more sacks coming off the edge. Some sack totals can be misleading sometimes, especially if you're playing a team that the tackle might have set up the sack. We had to prepare for Patrick Kerney unless they switched him over and he was going against Walter Jones. He has shown that he has that ability to get sacks on his own. That is the maybe one difference."

On how hard did Seattle press for David Carr...

"Well we pushed hard. Dave Carr said, he had a great visit with us. He was going to go on a little bit of a tour, but it really narrowed down to Carolina and Seattle. Any time we bring in a free agent, I am not going to sugar-coat anything. Absolutely I am not going to lie to him because, all of a sudden, if you sign him and what you tell him doesn't happen, you have an unhappy player and that a bad deal. We were going to be totally upfront about everything with David or any QB that comes in here. Matt is our quarterback. Now these are the situations...this is why I think it would be a good place for you. We sold him on that and I believe he liked that. I think Carolina, I don't know this for sure, but he got a real nice contract; that's one, and I think they talked to him about being the starter there. Now, we'll see what happens, but that's what you do in recruiting. We choose to do it in a different way."
On where Carr would stack up with Matt and Seneca...

"I talked to Seneca about this before David even visited. I thought Seneca did a good job for us last year and he got better as a quarterback. No question that he has improved as a quarterback. I tried to think about getting him on the field in other roles. I think he could be an outstanding pass receiver for us. He is a very talented man. He could return punts for us and do a good job there. We would be able to free Burleson and Engram up to concentrate on other areas. The thought process behind bring in a David Carr or anyone else is to have the assurance that if something were to happen to Matt, that you could use Seneca to play those other positions because you have a QB that can go in the game and play. Until that happens, until we sign another guy like that, I can't use Seneca in those other roles where he could help our team. So, that's why we are looking."

On his assessment of Seneca as a quarterback...

"I think he's fine. I really do. He works very hard and he is just what you want. Where he would develop more, like most guys who play quarterback, is when he has a chance to play. He will be so much better prepared this year to play than he would have been last year. In the Minnesota game, he had no reps during the week and he had to come in and play, so you knock that one out. He played very well against the Raiders, and he played very well against the Rams. I thought he made some bad decisions in the 49er game, but no one else helped him out too much either. The team played poorly. Our defense was horrible. So it is not always him. He is good enough to play in this league. Now how much longer can we keep him. He is a good backup. We are looking at backup QBs such as Carr, to give us some options."

On his thoughts concerning Jerremy Stevens...

"The Scottsdale episode was the end of it for him here. When he left at the end of the season, we discussed how a change of scenery would probably be good for everybody. Jerremy knew this. He wanted to test the free agent market as a lot of players do. It wasn't quite what he thought it would be and at the end, he would have to reconsider some things. He made great strides on and off the field while he was with us. I think he grew up a lot. It always worried me when he was out of my sight. In Arizona he had too much to drink and got busted. It is sad and it is a tragedy. Why does this happen...well it is a disease. More than a football thing. It is a life thing. If he asked for my help in anything, I would give it to him. That is the way I would handle any of my players."

On his opinion of character issues...

"A point of emphasis is prominent in the building. At the owners meeting in Arizona, we had sessions with the head coaches and owners. I would caution everybody this way however. You draft a player, and most of the time, you know everything about the background of the player you need to know. In Koren Robinson's case, we did not know 1 little thing about him that turned out to be a big deal. The public has a tendency to say there is character problems and lump everything in this pot. They should not do that. They are not all the same and their problems are not all the same. I am not defending our pick or anything like that. Part of coaching and teaching, my responsibility is to help them be good football players and hopefully help them to be better people. In Koren's case, everyone liked him. He was very talented guy who worked real hard. He is a good guy, but he suffered from a disease. In years past, we had a couple of guys who are no longer here, not anyone we have talked about today (Eaton for one), who I think are bad guys. Who are very selfish, drag down a team, and who did not care for anyone but themselves. Now that, to me, is a character issue. I tend to split those guys out. Not everyone who gets into trouble is a bad guy. There is a big push by the Seahawks to eliminate these types from the draft board."

On where will training camp be held...

"Training camp will be held at our place in Kirkland. We are working very hard at logistics of camp. In Cheney we were on auto-pilot. Everyone knew where we were going and what we were doing. We will make it work in Kirkland."

On Darrell Jackson and his future with the team...

"Darrell is under contract with the team. We will have a mandatory mini-camp the weekend following the draft. All players under contract have to be there. There are rumours about him that we are shopping him. We will sit down and talk and see where he is. He had something done with his knee and he is rehabbing it. The wide receiver group is thick and talented. This will be interesting to see who emerges and see how it works out."

Gladiator Hawk

[Comments taken in SeahawkBlue Forums]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page

The Science of a Punishing Tackle

Who knew that football would be relegated to the research of science? To me, football is a sport. The owners will call it a business. Advertisers call it a bonanza of marketing opportunity. Get real! Football is the icon of American sport. The rest of the world should be required to rename their their brand of futbol as kick ball.

This physical game I remember growing up, has matured such that organizations are turning to science to develop their game further. Popular Mechanics has reached beyond their little gadgets to paint a picture of the brute force that a vicious tackle given by our own Trufant will have on a lame lith wide receiver on the Philadelphia Eagles.

On the play shown in the photo above, Seattle Seahawks defensive back Marcus Trufant (23) drilled Philadelphia Eagles receiver Greg Lewis (83) with such force that Lewis couldn't hang on to the ball. (Seattle won the Dec. 5, 2005, game at Philadelphia 42-0 in the most lopsided shutout ever broadcast on Monday Night Football. So what is the anatomy of a tackle?

Mass, inertia, un-movable objects, you tend to forget from science class. No one forgets how to fry an ant with a simple piece of glass. Yet, who would know that a cornerback the size of Trufant could exert 1600 pounds of force upon a wide receiver? Yes 1600 pounds!

According to researchers, the human body can withstand double that, if the impact can be distributed well. That is where the player's pads and equipment enter the formula. The shape and the content of the "memory" foam padding are designed to maximize absorption of said energy. Visco elastic foam was developed by NASA to protect astronauts to withstand the G-forces of liftoff. This foam retains its shape considerable better than conventional foam after an impact.

According to a study at Darryl Tapp's former school Virgina Tech (a little NCAA humor), a player speared by a tackle, could receive up to a 150-G force hit to the head. Reviewing the graphic in the Popular Mechanics article, a hard tackle could inflict the impact 10-15 times that of G-force of an F-16. Remember that when Chad Johnson visits Seattle. Bryan Russell will be nicknamed F-16.

Gladiator Hawk

[Comments taken in SeahawkBlue Forums]

...Read more articles on SeahawkBlue's Front Page
